How Sandostatin LAR® Depot Works

Sandostatin LAR® Depot (octreotide acetate for injectable suspension) is similar to somatostatin, a naturally occurring hormone in the body. Both work in the same way to reduce excess hormone secretions that alter various metabolic activities that are important for your body. Sandostatin LAR® Depot, however, remains active in the body much longer than somatostatin.

Sandostatin LAR® Depot has a microsphere delivery system that allows it to be slowly and steadily released into your body over a 4-week period, thus allowing the convenience of once-a-month injections. "LAR" stands for Long Acting Release.

Octreotide LAR Depot Release
The delivery system for Sandostatin LAR® Depot consists of tiny spheres that contain octreotide, the active ingredient. When injected intragluteally, the octreotide is released over a period of 28 days.
